Lighting in Harsh Environments & Why You Need to Know the IP69K

Being confident with the product you choose

In today’s age, we are all mostly aware of the benefits LED lights have over traditional lighting methods. Namely:

  1. Efficiency – LED’s emit more lumens per watt than incandescent light bulbs
  2. Efficacy – LED’s lifetime is on average 400% longer than traditional bulbs
  3. Economy – reduce your costs on average by 81%

But what if you need more?

Allow me to introduce the term IP69K, and explain why it’s used worldwide to give us confidence that we won’t be left in the dark. Formally known as Ingress Protection Code, the IP Code classifies and rates the degree of protection provided by industrial casings and electrical enclosures against intrusion, dust, accidental contact, temperature and most importantly water.

The goal behind the coding is to provide users with more accurate information rather than vague marketing terms like waterproof. In order to attain the highest classification of IP69K a device must pass the following rigorous test:

Show no water ingress when blasted with 80°C water at a pressure of 1450 psi. This pressure is applied from 0°, 30°, 60° and 90° angles for 30 seconds each.

The codes first digit rates solid particle protection from 0 (no protection at all) to 6 (complete vacuum protection against all forms of solids and dust).

The final digit and letter designates the level of protection the enclosure provides against harmful ingress of water. Where 0 indicates no protection from water, and 9K specifies protection from powerful high-temperature water jets. See graphic below:

Importantly for us, we can be certain that when we see a LED fitting designated the code ‘IP69K’ we can be guaranteed that it has undergone the rigorous tests necessary to ensure its strength to keep the lights on when we need them most.

From cool rooms in butcher shops to heavy industry warehouses – IP69K rated LED lights guarantee to draw your customers attention, keep workers safe and withstand all forms of heavy-duty sanitisation.

So, when our needs go beyond the everyday light, the IP69K rating gives us confidence that whatever environments you need lighting in, your lights won’t blow out – and neither will your electricity bill.
